ATHENS CO FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM 6AM TUE, 2/22/22, UNTIL 6AM WED, 2/23/22, FLOODING POSSIBLE FROM EXCESSIVE RAINFALL
The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WATCH for Athens County in effect from 6:00AM Tuesday, February 22, 2022, until 6:00AM February 23, 2022.
- WHAT-Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
- WHERE-Portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio and West Virginia, including the following counties, in northeast Kentucky, Boyd, Carter, Greenup and Lawrence KY. In southeast Ohio, Athens, Gallia, Jackson OH, Lawrence OH, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington. In West Virginia, Cabell, Jackson WV, Lincoln, Mason, Pleasants, Putnam, Ritchie, Tyler, Wayne, Wirt and Wood.
- WHEN-From 6:00AM Tuesday, February 22, 2022, until 6:00AM February 23, 2022.
- IMPACTS-Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
- ADDITIONAL DETAILS-A wave of low pressure will bring persistent rainfall to an already soggy middle Ohio Valley from early Tuesday morning through Tuesday night. This could cause flooding of urban and other poor drainage and low-lying areas, along with rises on streams and rivers, which were still running high from rainfall late last week. http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WARNING for Athens County until 4:00PM Friday, 2/18/22.
- WHAT-Small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
- WHERE-A portion of southeast Ohio, including the following counties, Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington.
- WHEN-Until 4:00PM Friday, 2/18/22.
- IMPACTS-Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall.
- ADDITIONAL DETAILS-At 709 AM, Doppler radar indicated between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Flooding is already occurring in the warned area. Department of Highways reports numerous road closures due to flooding. Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Jackson, Nelsonville, New Lexington, Glouster, McArthur, Oak Hill, Somerset, and Rio Grande. – http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS-Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

- WHAT-Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 50 mph
- expected.
- WHERE-Portions of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky and central, northern, southern and western West Virginia.
- WHEN– Thursday, February 17, 2022, from 2:00 PM until 11:00 PM.
- IMPACTS-Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
