2/4/2022, 3:35 AM – Athens County is under a LEVEL 3 SNOW EMERGENCY.  All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel, or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest.

ATHENS CO FLOOD WARNING UNTIL 3:15AM FRI, 2/4/22, FLOODING IS OCCURRING, STAY OUT OF FLOOD WATER, SEEK SHELTER IF THREATENED

The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WARNING for Athens County in effect until 3:15AM, Friday, February 4, 2022.

  • WHAT…Small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring.
  • WHERE…Portions of southeast Ohio and West Virginia, including Athens County.
  • WHEN…Until 3:15AM, Friday, February 4, 2022.
  • IMPACTS…Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS… At 324 PM, County officials reported numerous road closures due to flooding throughout the warned area. Radar and gauges indicate that between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Freezing rain will gradually become the dominant precipitation type this afternoon. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

  • WHAT…Significant icing. Snow accumulations of up to 3 inches and ice accumulations of three tenths to three quarters of an inch.
  • WHERE…Portions of southeast Ohio and northeast Kentucky.
  • WHEN…Until 7:00AM, Friday, February 4, 2022.
  • IMPACTS…Expect widespread power outages and tree damage due to the ice. Travel could be impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.
