Athens Co FLOOD WATCH until Sat, 5/7/22, 8AM, flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible

The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WATCH effective until Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 8:00AM.

  • WHAT – Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
  • WHERE – Portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia and West Virginia, including the following counties, in southeast Ohio, Athens, Gallia, Jackson OH, Lawrence OH, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington
  • WHEN – Effective until Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 8:00AM.
  • IMPACTS – Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS – Thunderstorms capable of producing very heavy rain will move northeast across the region today into Saturday morning. One to two inches of rain with higher amounts are possible across these areas. – http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

  • WHERE-Portions of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky and central, northeast, northern, southern and western West Virginia.
  • WHEN-From 2:00AM until 9:00AM, Friday, April 22, 2022.
  • IMPACTS-Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Athens Co RED FLAG WARNING, Wed, 3/30/22, 12PM until 8PM, gusty winds, low relative humidity, outdoor burning not recommended

The National Weather Service has issued a RED FLAG WARNING for gusty winds and low relative humidity, which is in effect from noon to 8 PM Wednesday, 3/30/2022, for portions of Southeast Ohio including Athens County. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

  • Timing…Wednesday, 3/30/22, 12PM until 8PM.
  • Winds…South 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
  • Relative Humidity…Between 20 and 30 percent.
  • Temperatures…In the mid-70s to low 80s.
  • Impacts…Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Athens County until 7:15 PM, Wednesday, 3/23/2022. At 6:28 PM, a severe thunderstorm was located over Wellston, moving northeast at 70 mph.

  HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

  SOURCE…Radar indicated.

  IMPACT…Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include… Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Albany, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble, and Amesville.
