High water has been reported on the following Athens County roads by the Athens County Engineer’s Office;

  • CR 4 – Glen Ebon Rd
  • CR 58 – Frost Rd
  • CR 109 – Beebe Rd, near CR58, Frost Rd

Do not drive into high water, TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!!  Please avoid these areas.

The following incident has been listed by Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous as the April, 2018 Crime of the Month.

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office is requesting your information pertaining to a crime which occurred in the County.  On February 15, 2018 at approximately 3:40 AM, P.A.’s Sure Stop, located at 8942 United Ln. Athens, was forcibly entered.  After gaining entry into the business, three males quickly gathered a large amount of cigarettes and then fled the scene with them.  Area convenience stores/gas stations have suffered similar break-ins in the past and the same items (cartons of cigarettes) are stolen in large quantities.  Residents are asked if they see individuals sitting in vehicles or loitering in the early morning hours near these types of businesses, to call the appropriate law enforcement agency as soon as possible.  The board is offering a $2000 reward for information on this crime.

Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous is offering a cash reward for information on the above crime if that information leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible.  *Information on serious misdemeanors will be limited up to a $1000.00 cash reward.  **Any information that leads to the arrest of an individual responsible for graffiti, the board can authorize up to a $500.00 cash reward. FLOOD WARNING FOR ATHENS CO UNTIL 9PM, THU, 3/29/18, FLOODING IS OCCURING, SEEK SHELTER IF THREATENED!

Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Athens County until 9:00PM, Thursday, 3/29/18.

At 5:52PM, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated that heavy rain was falling over the area. The heavy rain will cause flooding of area creeks and streams, as well as culverts and roadside ditches.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Please report flooding to the National Weather Service by calling toll free, 800 401 9535, when you can do so safely.

Nelsonville City Grass and Weed Code Enforced April through October, 8 inches maximum!

The City of Nelsonville wants to remind residents within the City limits, that weeds, vines, and grass growing in heights of 8 inches or higher from April 1 through October 31, is in violation of Nelsonville City Code §91.14.01, and are subject to written notice, penalties and costs if not properly and adequately maintained.

While short grass and weeds may look nice, it is also an important way to prevent rodents, insects, and stagnant water from developing as a result of overgrowth. When grass and weeds are maintained below 8 inches, our community not only looks better, but its cleaner and safer too.

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR ATHENS CO, 8AM, WED, 3/28/18 TO 2PM, FRI, 3/30/18, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER

Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County from 8:00AM, Wednesday, 3/28/18 until 2:00PM, Friday, 3/30/18.

Excessive rainfall of up to 2.50 inches, with locally higher amounts possible through the watch period. With the ground being wet from previous rains and the expected rainfall, the potential for flooding of small streams and creeks and possibly river flooding is high.  Flooded roads, low lying and poor drainage areas, along streams, creeks and rivers, is possible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
