THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A HEAT ADVISORY FOR ATHENS COUNTY THURSDAY, 7/9/2020, IN EFFECT FROM 12 NOON TO 8 PM.

WHAT – Heat index values up to 100 expected again.

WHERE – Portions of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky and central, northern, southern and western West Virginia.

WHEN – From noon to 8 PM Thursday.

IMPACTS – High temperatures and humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, especially given the persistence of this heat wave.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.

  • The Commission is composed of three (3) persons who are appointed by council. 
  • The commission serves in the manner provided for in Section 124.40 of the Ohio Revised Code and rules and regulations of the Nelsonville Municipal Civil Service Commission relative to civil service in the City of Nelsonville. 
  • One for a term of two (2) years, one for a term of three (3) years.   
  • The commission meets on an as needed basis.

Nelsonville east side Poplar St at Harper St closed 7AM Wed, 7/8/2020 until 4PM Fri, 7/10/2020, please avoid this area

The City of Nelsonville announces that the east side of Poplar Street at Harper Street will be closed at 7:00 AM Wednesday, July 8, 2020 until 4:00 PM Friday, July 10, 2020. Poplar Street will only be closed on the east side of the intersection and all houses east of Harper Street will still be accessible heading west bound from Second Street. The roadway is being closed for an emergency storm sewer repair. Please use an alternate route.

Nelsonville Code Enforcement Office reminds residents of city ordinance that outlines rules for yard and garage sales

The City of Nelsonville Code Enforcement Office wants to make the residents of Nelsonville aware that there is a city ordinance that outlines the rules for yard and or garage sales in the City of Nelsonville. We have listed those rules below.

  • No more than (4) four sales per year
  • Sales can be no more than three (3) days in duration
  • Sales can start as early as 8:00 AM and run during daylight hours only
  • Signs advertising the sale can be erected on the premises or on the public right-of-way adjacent to the property
  • Signs cannot be posted off-site on utility poles, public utilities such as traffic control panels, or on private property except with the permission of the property owner
  • Signs need to be removed after twenty-four (24) hours at end of sale.
  • Sale merchandise is limited to household and personal items and shall not include separately obtained or purchased items or merchandise where the sale of such items would constitute a business activity or otherwise constitute a business use required to be located in a commercial or industrial zoning district.

Nelsonville aquatic center opens Tue, 7/7/20, maximum 125 persons, two swim sessions, 11AM to 2:30PM, 3PM to 6:30PM

The City of Nelsonville announces that the city’s aquatic center will open for the 2020 season on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. The aquatic center will be operating under modified rules and rates due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 RULES

  2. If you become sick or begin to have COVID-19 symptoms while at the aquatics center, please go home and seek medical treatment.
  3. Practice social distancing guidelines with persons outside your immediate family and social group.
  4. Face coverings are encouraged to be used while not swimming.
  5. Please follow social distancing floor markings while in line at the concession stand and restrooms.
  6. No children under 12 will be admitted without adult supervision.
  7. All lockers are off limits.
  8. No life jackets can be borrowed.
  9. We are limiting the sharing of all communal property.
  10. Bring your own chairs.
  11. No diving boards will be available.

Nelsonville NO PARKING, Kontner St, Mill St to E Franklin St Tue, 7/7/2020 to Fri, 7/17/2020, weekdays 7AM to 6PM

The City of Nelsonville announces that Kontner Street will have no on street parking permitted from Mill Street to East Franklin Street, Tuesday, July 7, 2020 through Friday, July 17, 2020.  The parking restrictions will weekdays from 7:00AM until 6:00PM.  The parking restrictions are for an R&R Pipeline gas line repair project, weather permitting.  Please avoid this area.
