The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County in effect from 2:00 PM, Thursday, August 4, 2022, until 10:00 PM, Sunday, August 7, 2022.
* WHAT … Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
* WHERE … Portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia and West Virginia.
* WHEN … From 2:00 PM, Thursday, August 4, 2022, until 10:00 PM, Sunday, August 7, 2022.
* IMPACTS … Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. The greatest risk period for flooding will be Saturday and Sunday afternoon and evening.

The City of Nelsonville announces that 100 feet of Jackson Street is closed at the East side of the of Watkins Street and Jackson Street intersection until Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 5:00PM. The roadway is closed due to a gas line replacement project. Please avoid this area and use an alternate route.

* WHEN … Wednesday, August 3, 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
* IMPACTS … Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS … Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
