2/4/2022, 3:10 PM – Athens County is under a LEVEL 2 SNOW EMERGENCY. Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be very icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roads. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work. Motorists should use extreme caution!
Nelsonville City offices will be closed today, Friday, February 4, 2022, due to LEVEL 3 Snow Emergency
The City of Nelsonville announces that all City offices will be closed today — Friday, February 4, 2022, due to severe weather.
The Athens County Sheriff’s Office has issued a LEVEL 3 Snow Emergency for Athens County today.
All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel, or a personal emergency exists. Please use extreme caution if you must travel.
What you can do to help
- Move parked cars from the street
- Stay home and stay safe.
- Be patient as Nelsonville crews clear the snow
- Remove snow and ice from your sidewalk
- In the event of any power outages, go to: https://www.aepohio.com/outages/report/ to report the outage right away.

All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest.

ATHENS CO FLOOD WARNING UNTIL 3:15AM FRI, 2/4/22, FLOODING IS OCCURRING, STAY OUT OF FLOOD WATER, SEEK SHELTER IF THREATENED
The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WARNING for Athens County in effect until 3:15AM, Friday, February 4, 2022.
- WHAT…Small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring.
- WHERE…Portions of southeast Ohio and West Virginia, including Athens County.
- WHEN…Until 3:15AM, Friday, February 4, 2022.
- IMPACTS…Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.
- ADDITIONAL DETAILS… At 324 PM, County officials reported numerous road closures due to flooding throughout the warned area. Radar and gauges indicate that between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Freezing rain will gradually become the dominant precipitation type this afternoon. However, continued runoff will contribute to rising creeks and streams into the evening hours. http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.
