Flood Warning for Small Streams in Western Athens Co until 745AM Fri, 6/22/18, seek shelter if threatened!

Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Small Streams in Western Athens County until 745 AM Friday, 6/22/18.

At 1040 PM, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain that fell earlier Thursday will cause flooding. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen, but up to two inches had fallen upstream. In addition, rainfall amounts over the past two days were as much as three inches.

The Sunday and Monday creeks, and other small streams in the area, were on the rise, and will exceed bankfull overnight in some locations. Several roads have already been impacted, and additional flooding is expected overnight.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Albany, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble, and The Plains.

Additional rainfall amounts of a quarter to a half inch are expected in the warned area overnight, mainly early on.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

ATHENS CO FLASH FLOOD WATCH FROM 1PM THU, 6/21/18 TO 2AM, SAT, 6/23/18, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS

Flash Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County from 1 PM, Thursday, 6/21/8 through 2 AM, Saturday, 6/23/18.

Multiple rounds of showers and storms are likely today through Friday. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected each day, with locally higher amounts.

Heavy amounts of rain in short periods of time may cause creeks and streams to rapidly rise out of their banks, along with the potential of flash flooding in urban areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Nelsonville W Washington St CLOSED, Cable Alley to Public Sq, Mon, 6/25/18, 7AM to 4PM, please use an alternate route

Nelso Road Closed

The City of Nelsonville Water Department will be closing West Washington Street from Cable Alley to the Public Square on Monday, June 25, 2018 for a water hydrant repair from 7:00AM until 4:00PM. Please use an alternate route.  During the same time period water service will be off on West Washington Street from Madison Street to the Public Square. Once repairs are complete and water is restored a boil order will be in effect for the area until further notice.

Heat Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Athens County, which is in effect from 1 PM to 8 PM, Monday, 8/18/2018.

  • HEAT INDEX VALUES, 100 to 102 due to temperatures in the lower to mid-90s, and dewpoints in the lower 70s.
  • TIMING, Midday to early evening.
  • IMPACTS, The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions, if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.   Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for NW Athens County until 4:30PM, please seek shelter if threatened by storm!

The National Weather Service in has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northwestern Athens County until 4:30PM.

At 3:55PM, a severe thunderstorm was located over Buchtel, or near Nelsonville, moving south at 10 mph.

  •  HAZARD, 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.
  • SOURCE, Radar indicated.
  • IMPACT, Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble and The Plains.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;
For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

6/15/18, Nelsonville boil order until further notice Grosvenor St from High St to end of Grosvenor St and Marietta Rd

Nelso Boil Order

The City of Nelsonville Water Department has issued a boil order until further notice for Grosvenor Street from High Street to the end of Grosvenor Street and all of Marietta Road.

Boil orders are put into place as a result of broken water lines or local flooding. When this happens, the drinking water may have been contaminated which can cause many illnesses.

Here are some tips to keep in mind, should you find yourself in this situation:

  • Bring water to a full boil, and boil for three minutes prior to use.
  • Use only boiled water for drinking, preparing food or baby formula.
  • To improve the flat taste of boiled water, keep cold in refrigerator.
  • Put a cup over your faucets as a reminder to not use tap water – not even to brush your teeth!
  • Instead of boiling water, you can disinfect water by adding one teaspoon unscented chlorine laundry bleach for every five gallons of water. Let stand 30 minutes before using.
  • Be sure to use sanitized food grade containers for storing water.
  • To disinfect water storage containers, pour a solution of one tablespoon of unscented chlorine bleach to a gallon of water into a container. Let the solution remain in the container for 10 minutes, then pour out the solution. Rinse with purified water.
  • Boiled or disinfected water can be stored for six months.
  • Dispose of ice cubes.
  • When washing dishes, make sure to sterilize dishes with a final dip in water that has one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Disposable tableware is an option during a boil order.
  • It is also recommended you sanitize hands when washing. Again, use one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water and rinse hand frequently by pouring rinse over the hands. Use paper towels to dry.
  • Water for bathing doesn’t need to be boiled. Supervise children to avoid water being ingested.
