The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WATCH for Athens County in effect from 6:00AM Tuesday, February 22, 2022, until 6:00AM February 23, 2022.

  • WHAT-Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
  • WHERE-Portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio and West Virginia, including the following counties, in northeast Kentucky, Boyd, Carter, Greenup and Lawrence KY. In southeast Ohio, Athens, Gallia, Jackson OH, Lawrence OH, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington. In West Virginia, Cabell, Jackson WV, Lincoln, Mason, Pleasants, Putnam, Ritchie, Tyler, Wayne, Wirt and Wood.
  • WHEN-From 6:00AM Tuesday, February 22, 2022, until 6:00AM February 23, 2022.
  • IMPACTS-Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS-A wave of low pressure will bring persistent rainfall to an already soggy middle Ohio Valley from early Tuesday morning through Tuesday night. The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WARNING for Athens County until 4:00PM Friday, 2/18/22.

  • WHAT-Small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • WHERE-A portion of southeast Ohio, including the following counties, Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington.
  • WHEN-Until 4:00PM Friday, 2/18/22.
  • IMPACTS-Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall.
  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS-At 709 AM, Doppler radar indicated between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Flooding is already occurring in the warned area. Department of Highways reports numerous road closures due to flooding. Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Jackson, Nelsonville, New Lexington, Glouster, McArthur, Oak Hill, Somerset, and Rio Grande.  – http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS-Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

The National Weather Service has issued a WIND ADVISORY for Athens County in effect Thursday, February 17, 2022, from 2:00 PM until 11:00 PM.

  • WHAT-Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 50 mph
  • expected.
  • WHERE-Portions of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky and central, northern, southern and western West Virginia.
  • WHEN– Thursday, February 17, 2022, from 2:00 PM until 11:00 PM.
  • IMPACTS-Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

  • WHAT-Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • WHERE-A portion of southeast Ohio, including the following counties, Athens, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington.
  • WHEN-From 4:00PM, Thursday, 2/17/22 until 4:00AM, Friday, 2/18/22.
  • IMPACTS-Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS-A cold front will stall over central Ohio on Thursday as a wave moves along the front. The front will slide eastward Thursday night. This will provide 1 to 2 inches of rainfall which may result in flooding. – http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

Village of Buchtel water outage to repair water leak, Wed, 2/16/ 22, 4PM to 7PM, boil order until Thu, 2/17/22, at 8PM

The Nelsonville Water Department will be repairing a main waterline leak in Buchtel on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, between 4:00PM and 7:00PM. The repair will cause a water outage for the Village of Buchtel until the repairs are completed.

Once the water service is restored a boil order will be in effect for the Village of Buchtel until Thursday, February 17, 2022, at 8:00PM. When a boil order is in effect, we ask all who are affected to boil their cooking and drinking water for three minutes before being consumed.

The City of Nelsonville is seeking applications for the City’s Aquatic Center Manager. The Aquatics Center Manager oversees the daily operation of the Nelsonville Aquatics Center. The daily operation includes but is not limited to open swim times, lap swimming, learn to swim program, parties/special events, and aqua aerobics. Aquatics Center Manager position is a seasonal position.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, interview, hire and train staff prior to the opening of the pool
  • Conduct training programs, staff meetings, and evaluations
  • Be the main point of customer service for the public including making decisions related to rule enforcement
  • Schedule and assign staff for appropriate coverage – including opening and closing of the facility
  • Maintain all required records concerning maintenance, pool chemistry, daily logs, first-aid/incident reports
  • Oversee and inspect all areas of the pool for sanitation and safe equipment
  • Schedule events and manage reservations for the facility
  • Fill out payroll
  • Report any problems or incidents to City Manager
  • Overseeing and assigning daily cleaning of the facility including locker rooms/restrooms, deck surfaces, trash/recycling, and pool vacuuming
  • Backwashing of pool, safe handling of chemicals, adjusting chemical levels to maintain a safe water chemistry
  • Order supplies including concessions, chemicals, and cleaning products
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary concession
  • Accurately count and oversee the appropriate handling of money, processing of credit card transactions, and maintain auditing practices as set by the Nelsonville City Auditor and State of Ohio
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and seasonal records/reports to be submitted to City Manager

The City of Nelsonville is seeking applications for the City’s Parks and Recreation Director. The Parks and Recreation Director is responsible for coordinating all City recreational activities/programs, including the planning and coordination for all ball leagues, and to be responsible for scheduling, drafts, umpires, sponsors or any other duty required for league operation. The Director will also be responsible for all field prep, including dragging, lining and conditioning. The Parks and Recreation Director reports to the City Manager.

Nelsonville water main repair near Mound St and W Franklin St, customers in the area may experience low pressure

The Nelsonville Water Department is currently working on a water main leak in the vicinity of Mound Street and West Franklin Street. Water service customers in the area may experience low pressure until the repair is completed. Once the repair is complete a boil order may be issued for the affected area.
