The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County from noon Sunday, 12/29/19 until Monday, 12/30/19.

Rain will become more widespread this afternoon and continue through the evening. The rain will be moderate to heavy at times late this afternoon and early evening. Total rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 2.0 inches will be possible through tonight.

Flooding of low-lying areas will be possible. In addition, some creeks may exceed their banks resulting in potential road closures, especially in southeast Ohio.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Athens County until 430AM Tuesday, 12/17/19.

At 1026 PM, Doppler radar and automated gauges indicate that 1 to 2 inches of rain has fallen. Additional light rain will fall into tonight. The Jackson County 9-1-1 center reported flooding along State Route 279 and John Evans Road. The Ohio Department of Transportation reported flooding along State Route 278 in Vinton County, and State Route 681 and State Route 56 in Athens County. Additional minor flooding is expected across the warned area as water drains through local creeks and streams.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Marietta, Belpre, Jackson, Wellston, Nelsonville, McArthur, Oak Hill, Beverly, Albany, Coolville, Lake Hope State Park, Vienna, Williamstown, Belmont, Tuppers Plains, Boaz, Newport and Chauncey.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

The snow emergency for Athens County has been canceled.  Please drive carefully some hazardous road conditions may still exist in remote areas of the county.

Athens County is under a LEVEL 1 SNOW EMERGENCY.  Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be icy. Motorists are urged to drive very cautiously.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County from 10AM, Monday 12/16/19 through 7PM, Tuesday 12/17/19. Strong storm system will track over the area. This storm has the potential to produce up to 3 inches of rain in some areas. Flooding streams, creeks and possibly rivers resulting in flooded roadways and low lying and poor drainage areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Athens County from 7PM Sunday, 12/15/19 until 10AM Monday, 12/16/19.

• WHAT – Mixed precipitation expected including snow, sleet and freezing rain. Total snow accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch.
• WHERE – Portions of southeast Ohio and central, northeast and northern West Virginia.
• WHEN – From 7PM this evening to 10AM Monday.
• IMPACTS – Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.
