ATHENS CO FLOOD WATCH FROM NOON SUN, 12/29/19 UNTIL 5AM MON, 12/30/19, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County from noon Sunday, 12/29/19 until Monday, 12/30/19.

Rain will become more widespread this afternoon and continue through the evening. The rain will be moderate to heavy at times late this afternoon and early evening. Total rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 2.0 inches will be possible through tonight.

Flooding of low-lying areas will be possible. In addition, some creeks may exceed their banks resulting in potential road closures, especially in southeast Ohio.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Flood Warning for Athens Co until 430AM Tue, 12/17/19, Turn Around, Don`t Drown when encountering flooded roads!

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Athens County until 430AM Tuesday, 12/17/19.

At 1026 PM, Doppler radar and automated gauges indicate that 1 to 2 inches of rain has fallen. Additional light rain will fall into tonight. The Jackson County 9-1-1 center reported flooding along State Route 279 and John Evans Road. The Ohio Department of Transportation reported flooding along State Route 278 in Vinton County, and State Route 681 and State Route 56 in Athens County. Additional minor flooding is expected across the warned area as water drains through local creeks and streams.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Marietta, Belpre, Jackson, Wellston, Nelsonville, McArthur, Oak Hill, Beverly, Albany, Coolville, Lake Hope State Park, Vienna, Williamstown, Belmont, Tuppers Plains, Boaz, Newport and Chauncey.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County from 10AM, Monday 12/16/19 through 7PM, Tuesday 12/17/19. Strong storm system will track over the area. This storm has the potential to produce up to 3 inches of rain in some areas. Flooding streams, creeks and possibly rivers resulting in flooded roadways and low lying and poor drainage areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Athens County from 7PM Sunday, 12/15/19 until 10AM Monday, 12/16/19.

  • WHAT – Mixed precipitation expected including snow, sleet and freezing rain. Total snow accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch.
  • WHERE – Portions of southeast Ohio and central, northeast and northern West Virginia.
  • WHEN – From 7PM this evening to 10AM Monday.
  • IMPACTS – Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.

  • WHAT, Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
  • WHERE, Portions of southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, northeast Kentucky and central, northeast, northern, southeast, southern and western West Virginia.
  • WHEN, From 10 AM to 7 PM Wednesday.
  • IMPACTS, Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

ATHENS CO WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY 10PM MON 11/11/19 UNTIL 12NOON TUE 11/12/19, 1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW EXPECTED

The National weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for Athens County from 10PM Monday, 11/11/19 until 12Noon Tuesday, 11/12/19.

  • WHAT, Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches. Isolated areas may receive up to 3 inches, mainly in West Virginia.
  • WHERE, Portions of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky and central, northern, southern and western West Virginia.
  • WHEN, From 10 PM this evening to noon Tuesday.
  • IMPACTS, Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute on Tuesday.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Rain this evening will switch over to all snow during the night, with snow ending from west to east Tuesday morning. As the snow begins, both air and road temperatures will quickly fall to below freezing, resulting in slick roadways. A few bursts of heavier snow may occur between midnight and sunrise, resulting in very poor visibilities and further enhancing hazardous driving conditions.

ATHENS CO EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING FROM 12PM, FRI, 7/19/19 TO 8PM, SAT, 7/20/19, TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST HEAT ILLNESSES

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, which is in effect from 12PM Friday, 7/19/19 to 8PM Saturday, 7/20/19. The Excessive Heat Watch is no longer in effect.

  • HEAT INDEX VALUES – 105 to 110, due to temperatures in the mid-90s, and dewpoints in the mid-70s.
  • TIMING – Highest heat indices occurring Friday afternoon into early evening, and again Saturday afternoon into early evening. The intervening night Friday night will be stiflingly warm and muggy.
  • IMPACTS – The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;
An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an Emergency call 9-1-1.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Athens County from 12:00 PM, Friday 7/19/19 until 8:00 PM, Saturday, 7/20/19.

  • HEAT INDEX VALUES – Near or above 105 due to temperatures in the mid-90s, and dewpoints in the mid-70s.
  • TIMING – 12:00 PM, Friday until 8:00 PM, Saturday.
  • IMPACTS – Heat stroke, heat exhaustion and other heat related illnesses will be possible, especially if you spend a significant amount of time outdoors or are involved in any strenuous outdoor activity.
