September 11, 2001, 10:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 93: a Boeing 757 aircraft, with a crew of seven and 33 passengers, not including four hijackers. As passengers attempted to subdue the hijackers, the aircraft crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Please take time out of your day to remember the terrorist attacks in New York City, and Washington, D.C., and the bravery of the passengers that went down with the plane in Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2001. Please honor the 2,507 civilians, 72 law enforcement officers, 343 firefighters, 10 emergency medical workers, and 55 military service personnel who lost their lives, or gave their lives saving others. Many first responders are still fighting for their lives, and others are losing their lives, because of their response to Ground Zero. Each year we lose a few more.

Take a few minutes and acknowledge the loss to the country and the victim’s families…mark the day, and remember…, so that WE WILL NEVER FORGET.

September 11, 2001, 9:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 175 flew into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, hitting between the 77th and 85th floors. When the towers were struck, between 16,400 and 18,000 people were in the WTC complex. Of those, the vast majority evacuated safely. The Nelsonville Fire Department will be closing the Nelsonville Public Square on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 7:30 AM until 11:30 AM for a 9-11 memorial service. The National Weather Service has issued a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH for Athens County in effect until 9:00PM, Friday, September 4, 2026.

Remember, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for Severe Thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe Thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce Tornadoes.

Nelsonville W Columbus St CLOSED starting Mon, 9/14/2026, at 8AM for three days for building demolition at 77 W Columbus St, please avoid this area and use an alternative route

The City of Nelsonville announces that the building located at 77 West Columbus Street will be demolished starting Monday, September 14, 2026, at 8:00AM. West Columbus Street will be closed from 65 West Columbus Street West to the September Street intersection. The alley behind the building will have the same road closure. The demolition contractors believe the work will take approximately 3 days, and the roadways will be closed all three days until the work is completed and the area is safe. If the closure time is extended there will be a public announcement. Please avoid this area and use an alternative route.
