The Nelsonville Fire Department will be closing the Nelsonville Public Square on Friday, September 11, 2020 from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM for a 9-11 memorial service. The memorial service will start at 8:46 AM, the time American Airlines Flight 11, flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Additional times will be commemorated at,

  • 9:03 AM, When United Airlines Flight 175 flew into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
  • 9:37 AM, When American Airlines Flight 77 flew into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia.
  • 10:03 AM, When United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Local emergency responders, along with the citizens they protect, will take time out of their work day to commemorate the terrorist attacks in New York City, and Washington, D.C., and the bravery of the passengers that went down with the plane in Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2001.  The commemoration ceremonies will honor the 2,507 civilians, 72 law enforcement officers, 343 firefighters, 10 emergency medical workers, and 55 military service personnel who lost their lives, or gave their lives saving others.  Many first responders are still fighting for their lives, and others are losing their lives, because of their response to Ground Zero.  Each year we lose a few more.

Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes and acknowledge the loss to the country and the victim’s families…mark the day, and remember…, so that WE WILL NEVER FORGET.

NW ATHENS CO FLASH FLOOD WARNING UNTIL 1:15PM, THU, 9/3/2020, SEEK SHELTER IF THREATENED BY FLASH FLOODING

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Northwestern Athens County until 1:15 PM, Thursday, 9/3/2020.

At 1015 AM, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

  • HAZARD – Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
  • SOURCE – Doppler radar.
  • IMPACT – Flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage and low-lying areas.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Lake Hope State Park, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble, The Plains, and Stroud Run State Park.

Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are possible in the warned area.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, and other low-lying spots.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Please report Severe Weather to the National Weather Service by calling toll free, 800-401-9535, when you can do so safely. You may also report severe weather by posting your report to the Charleston West Virginia National Weather Service Facebook Page, or by using the Twitter Hashtag, NWSRLX.

ATHENS CO FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 8PM THU, 9/3/2020, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County until 8:00 PM, Thursday, 9/3/2020.

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will affect the region today with periods of heavy rain likely. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches are expected in the Flash Flood Watch area, with locally higher amounts where thunderstorms pass repeatedly over the same location. Due to the saturated ground in many areas, there is an increased potential that the heavy rainfall will lead to flash flooding of small creeks and streams and poor draining urban areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to Flash Flooding. Flash Flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
