THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A FREEZE WATCH FOR ATHENS COUNTY, WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE SUNDAY NIGHT 5/12, THROUGH MONDAY MORNING 5/13.

TEMPERATURES – MINIMUM READINGS AROUND FREEZING.

TIMING – LATE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

IMPACTS – SENSITIVE VEGETATION MAY BE DAMAGED OR KILLED.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A FREEZE WATCH MEANS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE POSSIBLE.  THESE CONDITIONS COULD KILL CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE VEGETATION.  IF FREEZING TEMPERATURES BECOME MORE IMMINENT, A FREEZE WARNING WOULD BE POSTED.

The Nelsonville Street Department announces that Poplar Street will be closed between Burr Oak Blvd, SR78 and Hopkins Street, including the SR78 intersection for road repairs on Thursday, May 9, 2013, between 7:30AM and 3:00PM. Traffic will be detoured around the intersection and signs will be posted.

INCREASED WILDFIRE DANGER THIS AFTERNOON IN ATHENS CO, SUN, 5/5

LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY, DRY SURFACE LITTER AND SOUTHEAST WIND, WITH GUSTS UP TO 30 KNOTS WILL CREATE AN ENHANCED THREAT FOR THE SPREAD OF WILDFIRES THIS AFTERNOON.

OPEN BURNING OF ANY TYPE IS CONSIDERED VERY HAZARDOUS AT THIS TIME.  ACCIDENTAL ESCAPED DEBRIS BURNS ARE BY FAR THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF WILDFIRES IN OHIO.  ALSO, BE CAREFUL WITH HEAT AND SPARKS WHILE OPERATING ANY EQUIPMENT OR SMOKING IN WOODLAND AREAS.

PLEASE OBEY STATE FIRE LAWS AND REGULATIONS FOR ANY BURNING RESTRICTIONS.  OPEN BURNING IN OHIO IS PROHIBITED IN UNINCORPORATED AREAS IN MARCH, APRIL, MAY, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 6 AM AND 6 PM.

Alert Athens County Testing in Nelsonville Wed, 5/8 11AM to 12noon

Athens County Emergency Management Agency and Athens County Emergency Communications will be testing the Alert Athens County emergency messaging system in the City of Nelsonville on Wednesday, May 8th between the hours of 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM.  All test messages will be clearly designated by the phrase, “THIS IS ONLY A TEST”.  Alert Athens County messages can be delivered by email, SMS/text message, over the World Wide Web and by calling your home telephone or cell phone directly. Notifications may include: Road Closings, Boil Orders, Hazardous Weather Warnings and various other emergency and community notices.

All wired telephones in the county are automatically entered into the system.  But to receive messages on your cell phone or by Email you must register with Alert Athens County.  Register now and learn more at http://www.athenscountyema.org.  Alert Athens County is built exclusively to provide secure and reliable communications. Fire Damages Nelsonville Homes Apartment

The Nelsonville Division of Fire responded to a structure fire at the Nelsonville Homes apartment complex located at 900 East Canal Street in Nelsonville at 5:12 pm Wednesday afternoon.  On arrival firefighters found heavy smoke coming from apartment 37.  Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior fire attack with class A foam and water and were able to contain the fire to apartment 37.

The Apartment complex is owned by Logan Manor Management Company.  Apartment 37 was rented by Florence Wollett.  Firefighters estimate damage to the structure and contents at $30,000.00.  Firefighters believe the fire originated in the bedroom but were not able to determine a cause, but the fire is not suspicious in nature.  The Athens County Chapter of the American Red Cross was assisting several residence of the apartment building whose apartments were affected by the fire and smoke.

Nelsonville firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the York Township Fire Department.

All fire department units were clear of the scene and back in service by 7:32 pm.  If more information becomes available it will be released.
