Athens Co Cold Weather Advisory in effect from 1AM until 9AM, Wed, 1/22/25, very cold wind chills as low as 6 below expected

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for Athens County in effect from 1:00 AM until 9:00 AM, Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

* WHAT – Very cold wind chills as low as 6 below expected.

* WHERE – Portions of southeast Ohio including Athens County and central and northern West Virginia.

* WHEN – From 1:00 AM until 9:00 AM, Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

* IMPACTS – The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS – Be sure you and your loved one’s dress appropriately and cover exposed skin if venturing outdoors.

1/19/2025, 10:50AM – Athens Co LEVEL 2 SNOW EMERGENCY, roads hazardous, travel only if needed, use extreme caution!

1/19/2025, 10:50AM – Athens County is under a LEVEL 2 SNOW EMERGENCY.  Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be very icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roads. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work. Motorists should use extreme caution!

Greater Works and Nelsonville First Christian Church overnight emergency warming shelter, 200 Fort St, Nelsonville, open Sun, 1/19/25, through Wed, 1/22/25, 5PM to 10AM each day

The City of Nelsonville announces that Greater Works and the Nelsonville First Christian Church will be opening an overnight emergency warming shelter at the church located at 200 Fort Street in Nelsonville. The overnight emergency warming shelter will be open Sunday, January 19, 2025, through Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 5:00PM to 10:00AM each day.

The National Weather Service predicts more hazardous conditions in the coming days, with potential for more snow, and dangerously cold wind chills as low as 15 below possible. They have issued an Extreme Cold Watch in effect from 4:00 AM, Monday, January 20, 2025, until 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

Athens Co Extreme Cold Watch from 4AM, Mon, 1/20/25, until 12PM, Wed, 1/22/25, dangerously cold wind chills as low as -15 possible

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch in effect from 4:00 AM, Monday, January 20, 2025, until 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

* WHAT…Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 15 below possible.

* WHERE…Portions of southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, and central, northeast, northern, southeast, and southern West Virginia.

* WHEN… 4:00 AM, Monday, January 20, 2025, until 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The coldest period is most likely Monday morning.

* IMPACTS…The cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS – Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.

To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly.

Keep pets indoors as much as possible.

Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.

Nelsonville boil order for High St from Second St to Burr Oak Blvd until 12PM, Fri, 1/17/25, boil cooking and drinking water 3 min before consuming

The Nelsonville Water Department has issued a boil order for High Street from Second Street to Burr Oak Boulevard until 12:00PM, Friday, January 17, 2025. This boil order is necessary due to a water line break and repair.

When a boil order is in effect, we ask all who are affected to boil their cooking and drinking water for three (3) minutes before being consumed.
