Nelsonville Utilities Office closed to walk in traffic Fri, 3/21/25, for carpet cleaning, will reopen Mon, 3/24/25, normal hours

The City of Nelsonville Utilities Office will be closed to walk in traffic Friday, March 21, 2025, due to office carpet cleaning. The Utility Office will be open for telephone calls and payment processing through the payment drop box outside City Hall. Payments can also be made online at https://tinyurl.com/2stw3ure. The utilities office will reopen Monday, March 24, 2025, for normal business hours of 7:30AM to 4:00PM. The staff apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Athens County in effect for Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM. Dry conditions and gusty winds will create an enhanced risk for wildfire ignition and spread.

Timing…Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM.

Winds…South 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Relative Humidity…As low as 15 percent.

Temperatures…Up to 80 to 85 degrees.

Impacts…Enhanced risk of wildfire ignition and spread.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings.

Ohio annual statewide tornado drill Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at 9:50 a.m. outdoor warning sirens will go off for a test!

If you are a late sleeper, you might awaken Wednesday to the sound of blaring of outdoor warning sirens.

Ohio is having its annual statewide tornado drill at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 19 as a part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, which runs from March 16 to March 22.

Counties and communities including Nelsonville will have the chance to sound their outdoor warning sirens at that time. Emergency management officials have encouraged residents to go over their tornado safety plans during the drill.

Ohio had a record-breaking 74 tornadoes in 2024. A deadly EF3 tornado struck the Indian Lake region in Logan County on March 14, 2024, killing three people and injuring dozens more.
