QUESTION. Why is Canal Street being repaired and not the street I live on?

ANSWER. The funding for the Canal Street project is from a ODOT grant awarded specifically for the Canal Street project and 97%-98% funded by ODOT. The funds cannot be used for other projects. The budget for the Canal Street project is just under 3 million dollars with Nelsonville paying $150,000.

ANSWER. During the Canal Street project preconstruction meeting With ODOT and the contractor for the project agreed that the project will be on hold for the Parade of The Hills festival.

QUESTION. Why aren’t other streets being repaired?

The 2025 Ohio’s sales tax holiday runs from Friday, August 1st at 12:00 a.m. until Thursday, August 14th at 11:59 p.m.

The 2025 Ohio’s sales tax holiday runs from Friday, August 1st at 12:00 a.m. until Thursday, August 14th at 11:59 p.m.

What’s included

During this period, nearly all tangible personal property items that cost $500 or less per item will be exempt from state sales tax. This exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases.

Examples of items that are typically tax-exempt include:

  • Electronics (e.g., computers, televisions)
  • Clothing
  • Books
  • Home goods (e.g., furniture, kitchenware)
  • Plants (both indoor and outdoor)
  • Sporting goods
  • Dine-in food and beverages (excluding alcoholic beverages)
  • Dietary supplements
  • School supplies

What’s not included

Several categories of items remain subject to sales tax during the holiday, regardless of price:

  • Watercraft or outboard motors
  • Motor vehicles
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Tobacco products
  • Vapor products
  • Items containing marijuana
  • Services (e.g., repairs or installations)

Important considerations

  • The $500 limit applies per item, not to the entire purchase. So you can buy multiple eligible items, as long as each one is $500 or less, and they’ll all be tax-free.
  • The sales tax holiday applies to items purchased online as well as in stores.
  • Some retailers might have specific policies or rules regarding the sales tax holiday, so it’s always a good idea to check with individual stores before making your purchases.
