Athens County Flash Flood Warning until 10:15 PM, turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Athens County until 10:15 PM.

At 6:21 PM, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts up to 1.5 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

  HAZARD…Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

  SOURCE…Radar.

  IMPACT…Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Albany, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble, The Plains, Carpenter and Stroud Run State Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Report flooding to the National Weather Service by calling toll free, 800 401 9535, when you can do so safely.

The Nelsonville 10-inch water main leak has been repaired, and full water service has been restored to the Nelsonville water system.

A boil order for the entire Nelsonville water system including the Village of Buchtel and parts of York Township, is in effect for the area until 3:30PM, Thursday, May 15, 2025.

When a boil order is in effect, we ask all who are affected to boil their cooking and drinking water for three (3) minutes before being consumed.

The City of Nelsonville announces that Madison Street will be closed to vehicle traffic between West Columbus Street and West Canal Street until 10:00AM, Friday, May 16, 2025. The roadway is closed for repairs due to a water main break and repair. Please avoid this area and use an alternate route.

The Nelsonville Water Department has issued a boil order for the entire Nelsonville water system including the Village of Buchtel and parts of York Township, due to a 10-inch water line break and repair on West Columbus Street. The boil order will be in effect for the area until 3:30PM, Thursday, May 15, 2025.

When a boil order is in effect, we ask all who are affected to boil their cooking and drinking water for three (3) minutes before being consumed.
