Nelsonville Code Enforcement Office conducting exterior property and grass inspections this week

The City of Nelsonville Code Enforcement Office is notifying Nelsonville residents that exterior property and grass inspection are being conducted this week. The City has identified concentrated inspection areas where inspections of property will be performed in a proactive, more systematic manner. Inspections result from complaints received from the public.

If a complaint is filed and valid, a violation notice will be issued to the owner. If violations exist, a violation notice is issued giving the property owner time to make corrections. If violations are not corrected in consultation with the Department of Law, legal proceedings can be initiated against the property owner.

Common Code Violations:

  • High Grass and Weeds – Weeds and grass should not exceed eight (8) inches in height.
  • Garbage and Debris Accumulation – Such as paper, trash, garbage, waste, rubbish, refuse, junk, scrap materials such as automobile, trailer or vehicle chassis, parts or sections, or scrap iron, old metal, rope, bottles, lead pipe, paper, rags, stoves, furniture, or other waste materials which is or may become noxious, offensive, injurious, or dangerous to the public health, comfort, or safety.
  • Inoperable, Junk or Unlicensed Vehicles – Such as junk, inoperable motor vehicles and vehicles with expired registration May not be stored outside in the open must be in a completely enclosed building (not a tarp or vehicle cover).
  • Vehicle Parking – Vehicles parked in residential areas should be on hard surface i.e. concrete, asphalt, paver surface, not on grass.
  • Accessory Structures – Fences, sheds, accessory buildings, and structures shall be maintained structurally sound and in good repair.

ATHENS CO FLASH FLOOD WATCH 8PM, TUE, 5/4/21 TO 8AM, WED, 5/5/21, WATCH FOR RAPIDLY CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS!

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County from 8PM, Tuesday, 5/4/21 until 8AM, Wednesday, 5/5/21.

A cold front, capable of producing rainfall amounts between 1 and 1.5 inches, is expected tonight. The ground is already saturated from recent rain, and additional heavy rainfall is likely to cause excess runoff and localized flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Nelsonville Firefighter collapses and dies while fighting structure fire.

The Nelsonville Division of Fire is mourning the death of one of our own. Nelsonville senior firefighter, Jeff Armes, collapsed and died at the scene of a structure fire Sunday, May 2, 2021.

At around 5:04 pm, Sunday, May 2, the Nelsonville Division of Fire was alerted for a structure fire on Pleasantview Avenue.

While on scene and active in firefighting operations, firefighter Armes collapsed. Firefighters and EMS administered CPR and advanced life support care immediately. Armes was transported by Athens County EMS to OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital in Athens where he was pronounced dead.

Nelsonville Fire Chief Harry Barber informed the Department of the Line of Duty Death and asked everyone to “please keep all our firefighters and their families in your thoughts and prayers as we work through this difficult time.”

Scott Frank, Nelsonville City Manager, said “This is a day that we have all dreaded in our minds. We are keenly aware of the dangers of our public safety professionals, but we all have hoped they would continue to be looked over and protected. Now that tragedy has stricken our City, we must not fall apart but stand strong and band together to support the Armes family and those who are closest to them.”

Nelsonville boil order until further notice for all customers North of Public SQ due to water main break

The Nelsonville Water Department is currently working on a water main break on Pleasantview Avenue. Due to the water main break a boil order has been issued for all water customer North of the Public Square.

The Boil Order was issued due to a repair of a leak on the mainline. When a boil order is in effect, we ask those affected to boil their drinking and cooking water for three minutes before being consumed.

This Boil Order is in effect until further notice, unless notified otherwise.
