The City of Nelsonville announces Phase III of the Jefferson/Watkins Street Project will begin on Monday, October 28, 2013. Street closures will be Jefferson Street from Columbus Street to Washington Street . Residents on Terrace and ME Street will detour on the alley between Columbus and Washington during construction. Phase II will remain closed to traffic.
The City of Nelsonville announces that the Historic Public Square will be closed beginning at 11:00AM on Friday, October 25, 2013, for the Final Friday event. A Hay Ride will be included in the event from 5:30PM to 8:00PM that will run on Washington and Columbus Streets between Jefferson Street and the first alley before SR278. Motorists are urged to use caution while driving through the downtown area.

TIMING – TEMPERATURES WILL FALL GRADUALLY OVERNIGHT AND HOVER AROUND THE FREEZING MARK FOR DAWN ON THURSDAY.
IMPACTS – SENSITIVE PLANTS AND VEGETATION MAY BE DAMAGED OR KILLED IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN TO PROTECT THEM.

The Nelsonville Street Department announces that Harper Street will be closed to thru traffic from Poplar Street to Chestnut Street on Saturday, October 19, 2013, from 11:00AM to 3:00PM for the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church Fall Fellowship event. There will also be horse drawn hay rides on Chestnut Street to DeSteiguer Street , down DeSteiguer to Poplar Street , down Poplar to Second Street , down Second to Chestnut Street . Drivers are encouraged to use caution while driving through the area.
The City of Nelsonville announces that the following streets will be closed to traffic for this weekend’s Ohio Smoked Meat & BBQ Festival beginning at 8:00AM on Friday, October 18, 2013, continuing to 5:00PM on Saturday, October 19, 2013. The Historic Public Square, Rocky Boots Way from Columbus Street to Canal Street, West Columbus Street from September Street to Rocky Boots Way and Fayette Street from Rocky Boots Way to Valkinburg Alley. Drivers are urged to use caution while driving in the downtown area due to the number of visitors for the festival.
The City of Nelsonville announces that all city offices will be closed on Monday, October 14, 2013, in observance of Columbus Day.
The City of Nelsonville announces that the Historic Public Square will be closed to traffic on Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 2:00PM to 9:00PM for a Car Show/Cruise In and a showing of the movie Mischief. Residents are urged to use caution while traveling through the downtown area.
The outdoor emergency warning sirens in Nelsonville and The Plains will be tested at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, with a one minute sounding of the sirens. Local residents are asked not to call local emergency agencies inquiring why the sirens are sounding.
The outdoor warning siren system is normally tested on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 p.m. The monthly test will be cancelled if severe weather is threatening. If severe weather cancels the test it will be postponed until the next month. There are three conditions that result in the warning sirens being activated in Athens County.
1) Severe Weather
a) When the National Weather Service initiates a Tornado Warning for an area that includes areas of Athens County.
b) When the National Weather Service initiates a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (winds 58+ mph, large hail, severe lightening and heavy rains), for an area that includes areas of Athens County.
2) When there is an actual enemy or terrorist attack against the United States has been detected and is threatening areas of Athens County and protective action should be taken immediately.
3) When a public safety emergency occurs the sirens will be used to alert the public of emergencies such as hazardous materials incidents and civil disturbances.
When the outdoor warning sirens are sounded for an emergency they will be activated for five minutes. When you hear the warning sirens you should do the following;
DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 to ask why the sirens are sounding as this can overload the 9-1-1 emergency response system.
Remember, outdoor warning sirens are just that, out-door warning. The sirens are meant to be heard outside to signal you to go indoors and tune your radio or television station to the local Emergency Alert System (EAS) Station. As homes continue to become more energy efficient and sound proofing enhanced, outdoor warning sirens that once could be heard decades ago inside of a home can no longer be heard. That’s why other means of warning are in place.
Go immediately to a safe area in your home or building, if high winds, severe thunder and lightning are present.
If you are outside away from possible shelter, lie flat on the ground away from trees until the storm passes. If in a vehicle, get out and find a more substantial structure.
Carry a battery operated radio or NOAA all hazard alert radio to your safe area. You will know when the storm or emergency has passed and when it is clear to leave your safe area.
The Athens County SIRENS DO NOT identify specific types of storms or emergencies, therefore you should immediately seek shelter and tune to local television or radio for further information.
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 10 has announced that the official opening ceremony for the newly constructed US route 33 will be on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 9:30 AM. The opening ceremony will be held at the new State Route 78/ State Route 691 interchange and is open to the public. Persons wishing to attend the ceremony can access the area via the new State Route 691 access road off of old route 33 Southeast of Nelsonville.
Once the opening ceremony is complete ODOT hopes to have the new West bound lanes of US route 33 open by 12 noon. The new East bound lanes should be opened by 3:00 PM. Traffic on the new US route 33 will be down to a two lane roadway at the Elm Rock Road overpass Southeast of Nelsonville while construction crews complete the final transition away from the old roadway.
Persons traveling the new US route 33 corridor through the Nelsonville area should use caution do to numerous traffic pattern changes.
The City of Nelsonville announces that East Washington Street at Fort Street west to Jefferson Street will be closed to thru traffic Friday, September 27, 2013, from 12:00PM to 12:00AM Saturday, September 28, 2013, for Stuart’s Opera House Free Outdoor Concert. Travelers are urged to use caution while driving in the downtown area.
