Nelsonville & York Township FD launch 67th Annual Christmas food basket program

The Nelsonville Volunteer Fire Department in cooperation with the York Township Volunteer Fire Department will be holding their 67th annual Christmas food basket program. The program started in 1948 when firefighters distributed 14 food baskets. For this 67th year firefighters expect to distribute over 170 food baskets at a cost of more than $8,000. The Parade of The Hills Festival held annually in Nelsonville in late August was established to assist in raising funds for the program. Funds are still raised by the festival and by soliciting local businesses and groups for their support of the program.

Applications for Christmas food baskets will be available on Friday, November 27th, and must be returned by Saturday, December 5th. Applications will be available at the Nelsonville water office and the Nelsonville Fire Department. Approved Baskets will be delivered on Saturday, December 19th. Only residents of Nelsonville and York Township are eligible to apply for a basket. Persons having questions may call (740) 753-1244.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A WIND ADVISORY FOR ATHENS COUNTY, WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM EST THIS EVENING.

WINDS – WINDS GUSTS WILL REACH 40 TO 50 MPH AT TIMES.

IMPACTS – STRONG WINDS COULD CAUSE TREE DAMAGE, POWER FLUCTUATIONS OR EVEN OUTAGES. CONSTRUCTION SITES ARE VULNERABLE LOCATIONS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;
 A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT WIND GUSTS EXCEEDING 45 MPH ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT, ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION.

Athens Co Emergency Warning Sirens will be tested Wed, 11/4 at 12 noon in Nelsonville, The Plains and New Marshfield

Siren Test

The outdoor emergency warning sirens in Nelsonville, The Plains and New Marshfield will be tested at 12 noon on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, with a one minute sounding of the sirens. Local residents are asked not to call local emergency agencies inquiring why the sirens are sounding.

The outdoor warning siren system is normally tested on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 p.m. The monthly test will be cancelled if severe weather is threatening. If severe weather cancels the test it will be postponed until the next month. There are three conditions that result in the warning sirens being activated in Athens County.
1) Severe Weather

a) When the National Weather Service initiates a Tornado Warning for an area that includes areas of Athens County.

b) When the National Weather Service initiates a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (winds 58+ mph, large hail, severe lightening and heavy rains), for an area that includes areas of Athens County.

2) When there is an actual enemy or terrorist attack against the United States has been detected and is threatening areas of Athens County and protective action should be taken immediately.
3) When a public safety emergency occurs the sirens will be used to alert the public of emergencies such as hazardous materials incidents and civil disturbances.

When the outdoor warning sirens are sounded for an emergency they will be activated for five minutes. When you hear the warning sirens you should do the following;

1. DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 to ask why the sirens are sounding as this can overload the 9-1-1 emergency response system.

2. Remember, outdoor warning sirens are just that, out-door warning. The sirens are meant to be heard outside to signal you to go indoors and tune your radio or television station to the local Emergency Alert System (EAS) Station. As homes continue to become more energy efficient and sound proofing enhanced, outdoor warning sirens that once could be heard decades ago inside of a home can no longer be heard. That’s why other means of warning are in place.

3. Go immediately to a safe area in your home or building, if high winds, severe thunder and lightning are present.

4. If you are outside away from possible shelter, lie flat on the ground away from trees until the storm passes. If in a vehicle, get out and find a more substantial structure.

5. Carry a battery operated radio or NOAA all hazard alert radio to your safe area. You will know when the storm or emergency has passed and when it is clear to leave your safe area.

6. The Athens County SIRENS DO NOT identify specific types of storms or emergencies, therefore you should immediately seek shelter and tune to local television or radio for further information.

Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous, November 2015 Crimes of the Month

The following incidents have been listed by Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous as November 2015 Crimes of the Month.

The Athens Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to two separate criminal acts which have occurred within the City of Athens.

The first incident pertains to a stolen vehicle which occurred between October 22nd, 2015 at 4:00 PM and October 23rd, 2015 at 3:00 PM. The owner stated his white 1998 four door Jeep Cherokee, bearing Ohio registration FEV-5749, was parked in the parking lot at 85 N. Court St. The owner stated the vehicle was locked and he had the only ignition key to it. When the owner returned to the vehicle at the aforementioned time, he noticed it was missing.

The last incident pertains to a robbery which occurred during the early morning hours of October 25th, 2015. The victim explained that he was walking on W. Union St and that was the last memory he could recall. When he awoke in front of the Smiling Skull, the victim was covered in blood and several of his personal belongings had been stolen. The victim required medical treatment as a result of the incident.

The Nelsonville Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to two separate criminal acts which have occurred within the City of Nelsonville.

The first incident pertains to a stolen vehicle which occurred between October 22nd, 2015 and October 23rd, 2015. The owner stated his silver 1992 four door Jeep Cherokee, bearing Ohio registration GEZ-4408, was parked in front of 283 Fort St. When the owner returned to the vehicle on the morning of October 23rd, it was no longer where he had parked it.

The last incident pertains to a theft which occurred on or about October 23rd, 2015. Tri-County Joint Vocational School, Carpentry Class is in the process of constructing a house at 756 Lake Hope Dr. When construction ended for the day, all of the power tools were secured in a tool trailer that was left on site. Over the weekend, the perpetrator(s) forcibly entered the box trailer and stole all of the power tools.

Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous is offering a $2,000.00 cash reward for information on the above crimes if that information leads to the arrest and/or indictment of the person or persons responsible. *Information on serious misdemeanors will be limited to a $1000.00 cash reward. **Any information that leads to the arrest of an individual responsible for graffiti, the board can authorize up to a $500.00 cash reward.
