The City of Nelsonville announces that the Nelsonville Water Office will be closed Monday, December 14, 2015 for a computer software conversion. The Water Office will re-open on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 8:00 am for regular business.

Nelsonville boil order canceled for east of Mason City Hill, Buchtel, Sylvania AV, Woodlane DR and Carbonhill-Buchtel RD
The Nelsonville Water Department has canceled the boil order for water service customers east of Mason City Hill which included Buchtel, Sylvania Avenue, Woodlane Drive and Carbonhill-Buchtel Road. The City thanks everyone for their patience and understanding during this episode.
DENSE FOG ADVISORY FOR ATHENS CO UNTIL 10AM SAT, 12/5, USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING, ALLOW EXTRA TRAVEL TIME!
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A DENSE FOG ADVISORY FOR ATHENS COUNTY, WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM THIS MORNING SATURDAY DECEMBER 5TH.
VISIBILITIES: AREAS OF DENSE FOG WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS. VISIBILITIES OF ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES CAN BE EXPECTED.
IMPACTS: POOR VISIBILITIES WILL RESULT IN HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. MOTORISTS ARE URGED TO SLOW DOWN AND EXERCISE CAUTION. DO NOT ASSUME THE ROAD AHEAD IS UNOBSTRUCTED. IN ADDITION, FREEZING TEMPERATURES MAY ALLOW FOR A FEW SLICK SPOTS TO DEVELOP, PRIMARILY ON ELEVATED ROADS AND OVERPASSES. ALLOW EXTRA TRAVEL TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION.

Nelsonville WATER OUTAGE/ BOIL ORDER 7PM 12/4, Buchtel, Sylvania AV, Woodlane DR, Carbonhill-Buchtel RD, until further notice!
The Nelsonville Water Department announces that beginning at 7 PM, Friday December 4, the water service customers east of Mason City Hill will be without water due to a necessary water line repair. This includes the Village of Buchtel, Sylvania Avenue, Woodlane Drive, Carbonhill-Buchtel Road. The water will be off until the repair is complete. A boil order will be in effect once water service has been restored, until further notice.
Boil orders are put into place as a result of broken water lines or local flooding. When this happens, the drinking water may have been contaminated which can cause many illnesses.
Here are some tips to keep in mind, should you find yourself in this situation:
- Bring water to a full boil, and boil for three minutes prior to use.
- Use only boiled water for drinking, preparing food or baby formula.
- To improve the flat taste of boiled water, keep cold in refrigerator.
- Put a cup over your faucets as a reminder to not use tap water – not even to brush your teeth!
- Instead of boiling water, you can disinfect water by adding one teaspoon unscented chlorine laundry bleach for every five gallons of water. Let stand 30 minutes before using.
- Be sure to use sanitized food grade containers for storing water.
- To disinfect water storage containers, pour a solution of one tablespoon of unscented chlorine bleach to a gallon of water into a container. Let the solution remain in the container for 10 minutes, then pour out the solution. Rinse with purified water.
- Boiled or disinfected water can be stored for six months.
- Dispose of ice cubes.
- When washing dishes, make sure to sterilize dishes with a final dip in water that has one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Disposable tableware is an option during a boil order.
- It is also recommend you sanitize hands when washing. Again use one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water and rinse hand frequently by pouring rinse over the hands. Use paper towels to dry.
- Water for bathing doesn’t need to be boiled. Supervise children to avoid water being ingested.
Athens County Emergency Warning Sirens will be tested Wed, 12/2 at 12 noon in Nelsonville, The Plains, New Marshfield
The outdoor emergency warning sirens in Nelsonville, The Plains and New Marshfield will be tested at 12 noon on Wednesday, December 2, 2015, with a one minute sounding of the sirens. Local residents are asked not to call local emergency agencies inquiring why the sirens are sounding.
The outdoor warning siren system is normally tested on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00 p.m. The monthly test will be cancelled if severe weather is threatening. If severe weather cancels the test it will be postponed until the next month. There are three conditions that result in the warning sirens being activated in Athens County.
- Severe Weather
- When the National Weather Service initiates a Tornado Warning for an area that includes areas of Athens County.
- When the National Weather Service initiates a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (winds 58+ mph, large hail, severe lightening and heavy rains), for an area that includes areas of Athens County.
- When there is an actual enemy or terrorist attack against the United States has been detected and is threatening areas of Athens County and protective action should be taken immediately.
- When a public safety emergency occurs the sirens will be used to alert the public of emergencies such as hazardous materials incidents and civil disturbances.
When the outdoor warning sirens are sounded for an emergency they will be activated for five minutes. When you hear the warning sirens you should do the following;
- DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 to ask why the sirens are sounding as this can overload the 9-1-1 emergency response system.
- Remember, outdoor warning sirens are just that, out-door warning. The sirens are meant to be heard outside to signal you to go indoors and tune your radio or television station to the local Emergency Alert System (EAS) Station. As homes continue to become more energy efficient and sound proofing enhanced, outdoor warning sirens that once could be heard decades ago inside of a home can no longer be heard. That’s why other means of warning are in place.
- Go immediately to a safe area in your home or building, if high winds, severe thunder and lightning are present.
- If you are outside away from possible shelter, lie flat on the ground away from trees until the storm passes. If in a vehicle, get out and find a more substantial structure.
- Carry a battery operated radio or NOAA all hazard alert radio to your safe area. You will know when the storm or emergency has passed and when it is clear to leave your safe area.
- The Athens County SIRENS DO NOT identify specific types of storms or emergencies, therefore you should immediately seek shelter and tune to local television or radio for further information.
Nelsonville fall leaf pick up extended thru Fri, 12/4
The City of Nelsonville announces that the fall leaf pick up has been extended thru Friday, December 4, 2015. If you have leaves that need picked up after December 4, 2015 they must be bagged in order for them to picked up. Call City Hall at 740-753-1314, Monday – Friday, 8AM – 5PM to schedule a pick up.
Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous, December 2015 Crimes of the Month
The following incidents have been listed by Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous as December 2015 Crimes of the Month.
The Athens Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to a criminal act which occurred within the City of Athens.
The incident pertains to a robbery which occurred during the early morning hours of October 25th, 2015. The victim explained that he was walking on W. Union St and that was the last memory he could recall. When he awoke in front of the Smiling Skull, the victim was covered in blood and several of his personal belongings had been stolen. The victim required medical treatment as a result of the incident. (See pictures below)
The Nelsonville Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to two separate criminal acts which have occurred within the City of Nelsonville.
The first incident pertains to a theft which occurred on or about October 23rd, 2015. Tri-County Joint Vocational School, Carpentry Class is in the process of constructing a house at 756 Lake Hope Dr. When construction ended for the day, all of the power tools were secured in a tool trailer that was left on site. Over the weekend, the perpetrator(s) forcibly entered the box trailer and stole all of the power tools.
The last incident pertains to a burglary which occurred on November 18th, 2015 at approximately 3:00 AM. The residents of 16047 Elm Rock Rd. Apartment #3, advised they were awakened by a thinly-built male who had forcibly entered their residence. After the residents began to scream, the male fled the residence, stealing an undisclosed amount and type of prescription medication. The Ohio University Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to a series of criminal acts which have occurred on the Ohio University campus.
The Ohio University Police Department is currently investigating six incidents, thus far, which appear to be related. In three separate parking lots on S. Green Dr., individuals who have parked their vehicles in these lots have had the catalytic converters illegally removed from them. These incidents appear to have begun on November 19th, 2015 and the Ohio University Police Department continues to take additional reports of this activity.
Athens County Law Enforcement Agencies.
Several law enforcement agencies in the county are experiencing an increase in the number of reports related to parked vehicles being entered and miscellaneous items being stolen. The items range from coins, to purses, to expensive electronic equipment. Residents are reminded not to leave valuables in their vehicles and to properly secure them (vehicles) if left unattended. **The Crime Solvers Board will determine the proper reward amount for any information that leads to arrest and indictment of individuals involved in these acts.
Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous is offering a $2,000.00 cash reward for information on the above crimes if that information leads to the arrest and/or indictment of the person or persons responsible. *Information on serious misdemeanors will be limited to a $1000.00 cash reward. **Any information that leads to the arrest of an individual responsible for graffiti, the board can authorize up to a $500.00 cash reward.
