ATHENS CO FLOOD ALERT, Large scale flooding possible across county through Sun, 2/25/18, Be prepared to take action if needed!

Print

Periods of heavy rain into the weekend will increase the threat for flooding through Sunday in Athens County. Waves of low pressure, along a front over the area, will bring several more rounds of heavy rainfall throughout the weekend ending Sunday afternoon.

Flooding of poor drainage and low-lying areas and roadways, especially along small streams, creeks and the Hocking River, are likely across Athens County.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;

There is a potential for large scale flooding across Athens County based on current forecasts. Athens County residents should monitor forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to act should flooding develop.

Knowing the answers to these questions ahead of time can save your life.

  • Is your home, business or school in a floodplain?
  • Where is water likely to collect on the roadways you most often travel?
  • What is the fastest way to get to higher ground?

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Make sure your cell phone and portable radios are all charged in case you lose power or need to evacuate. Also make sure you have back-up batteries on hand.

If it is likely your home will flood, don’t wait to be ordered to leave; evacuate yourself! Make alternative plans for a place to stay. If you have pets, take them with you or plan to board them at a facility well away from the flooding danger.
