Nelsonville natural gas leak evacuation CANCELED, please avoid area, thank you for your assistance and cooperation

The Nelsonville Division of Fire has contained the natural gas leak at the intersection of Walnut Street and Harper Street. Person who were evacuated may return to their homes. Crews are working in the area so please avoid this area. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation during this incident.

The Nelsonville Division of Fire has responded to a major natural gas leak at the intersection of announces that intersection of Walnut Street and Harper Street. Crews are working to stop the leak but it necessary for anyone living within ½ block of the intersection to evacuate the area for their safety. When evacuating, DO NOT open or close windows or turn light switches on or off. Please just leave your home for a safer area. Once the area is safe the Fire Department will release information about returning home. People outside this ½ block area should stay indoors and away from the area. If you have an emergency call 9-1-1 for assistance. Thank you for your assistance in this urgent matter.

The Municipal Zoning Board of the City of Nelsonville has 4 open positions available.

  • The Commission is composed of Five (5) persons who are appointed by council.  
  • The Board obtains its jurisdiction, power and limit of authority from the Council of the City of Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio under Nelsonville City Charter §7.02, Ordinance 44-98 (“the Zoning Code”) of the City of Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio and any amendments thereto which became originally effective December 28, 1998; Ordinance 59-06 (“the Sign Regulations”) of the City of Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio and any amendments thereto which became  originally effective on February 8, 2007; and Ordinance 21-85 (“the Flood Damage Reduction Code”) of the City of Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio, and any amendments thereto which became originally effective on January 6, 1986 and substantially amended on December 18, 2009.
  • The Board will hear cases as provided in applicable codes which include appeals.

                  (a)   alleging error in an administrative order or decision

                  (b)   alleging error in interpretation of application information

                  (c)   requesting variance from the Zoning Code

                  (d)   requesting variance from the Sign Regulations

                  (e)   requesting variance from the Flood Damage Reduction Code

             and applications for.

                  (f)    conditional or special use permits

                  (g)   change to non-conforming uses or buildings

                  (h)   bed and breakfast establishments

                  (i)    home occupations

                  (j)    extension of permits for temporary buildings

Nelsonville boil order for Saint John Street until Tue, 7/21/2020 at 3:30 PM, unless notified otherwise

The Nelsonville Water Department has issued a boil order for Saint John Street until Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 3:30 PM, unless notified otherwise.

The Boil Order has been issued due to a repair for a leak on the mainline. When a boil order is in effect, we ask those affected to boil their drinking and cooking water for three minutes before being consumed.

Please remember this Boil Order is in effect until Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 3:30 PM, unless notified otherwise.

ATHENS CO HEAT ADVISORY SUNDAY IN EFFECT 12 NOON TO 6PM, HEAT INDEX 102 EXPECTED, TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST HEAT INJURIES

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Athens County in effect Sunday, 7/19/2020 from 12 noon to 6PM.

WHAT, Heat index values up to 102 expected.

WHERE, Portions of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky and central, northern, southern and western West Virginia.

WHEN, From 12 noon to 6 PM Sunday.

IMPACTS, Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.

Due to Public Health Advisory Risk Level 3, face coverings REQUIRED to enter Nelsonville Aquatics Center beginning 7/18/2020

Athens County has issued an Ohio Public Health Advisory System Risk Level 3 “RED” – Very high exposure and spread is occurring in Athens County. Due to this advisory level the Nelsonville Aquatics Center wants to remind customers of their COVID-19 rules which now includes that face coverings are REQUIRED to enter the facility and must be worn while not swimming starting July 18, 2020.

  1. If you feel sick or have COVID-19 or COVID-19 symptoms DO NOT come to the aquatics center.
  2. If you become sick or begin to have COVID-19 symptoms while at the aquatics center, please go home and seek medical treatment.
  3. Practice social distancing guidelines with persons outside your immediate family and social group.
  4. Face coverings are REQUIRED to enter aquatics center and must be worn while not swimming.
  5. Please follow social distancing floor markings while in line at the concession stand and restrooms.
  6. No children under 12 will be admitted without adult supervision.
  7. All lockers are off limits.
  8. No life jackets can be borrowed.
  9. We are limiting the sharing of all communal property.
  10. Bring your own chairs.
  11. No diving boards will be available.
