Athens Co FLOOD WARNING in effect until 7:45PM, Tue, 1/3/2023, Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring

The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WARNING for Athens County in effect until 7:45PM, Tuesday, 1/3/2023.

* WHAT…Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring.

* WHERE…Portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio and West Virginia, including the following counties, in northeast Kentucky, Greenup. In southeast Ohio, Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington. In West Virginia, Mason and Wood.

* WHEN…Until 7:45PM, Tuesday, 1/3/2023.

* IMPACTS…Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…

  – At 1046 AM EST, the Department of Highways reported several road closures due to high water. Between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen.

  – Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are possible in the warned area.

  – Some locations that will experience flooding include… Parkersburg, Athens, Marietta, Belpre, Jackson, Nelsonville, Pomeroy, Glouster, McConnelsville, Mcarthur, Oak Hill, Beverly, Rio Grande, Albany, and Coolville.

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

* WHERE…Portions of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia and central, northeast, northern, southeast, southern and western West Virginia.

* WHEN… 3AM, Friday, 12/23/22, until 7AM, Saturday, 12/24/22.

* IMPACTS…Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
