Am I required to have trash pickup if I live in the City of Nelsonville?

Yes, all persons, residential and commercial are required to have trash collected and then dispose of it through services provided exclusively by the Athens Hocking Recycling and Refuse.

Am I required to have a trash can to put my trash in?

Yes, all trash shall be kept in leak proof containers. All containers shall be washed and treated with a disinfectant as often as necessary to prevent nuisance by the residential householder or commercial user.

When do I put my trash out?

“Day of pick-up” means a period of time no earlier than 6:00 P.M the day before, no later than 6 A.M the day of scheduled collection.

What if I am handicapped?

The City Manager may require Athens Hocking Recycling and Refuse to provide special assistance to handicapped residents where he finds such assistance necessary. Call (740) 753-1314 to make special arrangements.

Where do I store my trash cans after my trash has been picked up?

Containers shall be continuously stored in accordance with location and screening requirements of Nelsonville City Code. Resident or Owner cannot store containers in front of a structure and the property line adjacent to the frontage street or public right-of-way. Containers stored on attached open front porches or decks or on the side of structures shall not be visible from the street or public right-of-way. If visible, containers shall be positioned or screened as effectively as possible so as to minimize visibility from streets, alleys, secondary rights of way and adjacent properties and premises. Containers must be located in a proper storage area to prevent receiving a code violation.

  How do I screen my trash can?

If you do not have suitable fencing or do not want a shed, camouflage your trash cans with a combination of a piece of lattice or fencing arranged at a right angle to your house. Simply tuck your bins against the side of your house and wrap a big privacy screen around it. If you choose lattice, you can transform it into a living wall of greenery!

Can I get a code violation if I don’t comply?

Yes, refuse, rubbish or special rubbish stored in receptacles or containers or in piles on the premises in possession of the party responsible therefore for a period exceeding seven (7) days is declared a public nuisance. Any person who shall violate any provisions of the chapter shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be fined in an amount not exceeding one hundred fifty dollars ($150.00) for each violation. Each day in which any such violation shall continue shall be deemed a separate offense.
