Flood Warning for NW Athens Co until 2PM, Wed, 3/1/17, seek shelter if threatened!

Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Northwestern Athens County until 200 PM.

At 1101 AM, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain has ended, however streams and creeks will continue to rise as runoff enters the waterways. Many small streams and creeks are either at bank full or have overflowed their banks and it will still take several hours for the water to recede.  Continue to use caution when traveling and be aware of ongoing road closures due to high water.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Murray City and Trimble.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Flash Flood Warning for NW Athens Co until 1115AM, Wed, 3/1/17, seek shelter if threatened!

Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Northwestern Athens County until 1115 AM.

At 822 AM, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Murray City, Trimble.

Multiple rounds of showers and storms have hit the warned area with more rain falling. Upwards of 2 inches of rain has already fallen.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

REMEMBER, A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Athens County until 415 AM, Wednesday, March 1, 2017

At 347 AM EST, a severe thunderstorm was located over Lake Hope State Park, moving east at 60 mph.

  • HAZARD…70 mph wind gusts.
  • SOURCE…Radar indicated.
  • IMPACT…Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to
  • mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FOR ATHENS CO UNTIL 7PM WED, 3/1/17, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS!

Flash Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County until 7 PM Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

Rain today is saturating already wet grounds, and additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected at times through Wednesday afternoon. Where showers and storms persist, flash flooding will be possible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

DENSE FOG ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR ATHENS CO UNTIL 10AM, MON, 2/20/17, SLOW DOWN, USE HEADLIGHTS!

The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Athens County which is in effect until 10 AM Monday, 2/20/2017.

  • Visibility – One quarter mile or less at times.
  • Timing – Through 10 am Monday.
  • Impacts – Low visibilities will make it difficult to see, so slow down and use extreme caution.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Dense Fog Advisory means visibility will frequently be reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving, slow down, use your headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HAS ISSUED A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY FOR ATHENS COUNTY WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM FRIDAY 1/13/17 UNTIL 4 PM SATURDAY 1/14/17.

  • HAZARD TYPES – FREEZING RAIN.
  • ICE ACCUMULATIONS – AROUND A TENTH OF AN INCH.
  • TIMING – FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY MORNING.
  • IMPACTS – SLIPPERY ROADS AND SIDEWALKS. BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES WILL FREEZE FIRST.
  • TEMPERATURES – 30 TO 35 F.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF FREEZING RAIN OR FREEZING DRIZZLE WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SLIPPERY ROADS. SLOW DOWN AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
