Severe Thunderstorm Watch

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR ATHENS COUNTY UNTIL 9:00 PM, FRIDAY, 7/7/2017.

REMEMBER, A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

Athens Co Flash Flood Warning until 9PM, Fri, 6/23/17, seek shelter if threatened, avoid flood waters!

Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Athens County until 9:00PM, Friday, 6/23/17.

At 459 PM, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain falling across the warned area. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Chauncey, Buchtel and Jacksonville.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.

ATHENS CO FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT 2AM, FRI, 6/23/17 TO 6AM SAT, 6/24/17, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS

Flash Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County from 2:00 AM, Friday, 6/23/17 to 6:00 AM, Saturday, 6/24/17.

In general, 1 and a half to 3 and a half inches of rain is possible across the watch area, with locally heavier amounts, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy combine with a cold front dropping in from the northwest.

The heavy rain in the forecast will fall over a large area, which could easily overwhelm creeks and streams, and cause rises on the main stem rivers. Also, urban flooding is possible, as well as in poor drainage or other low lying areas. Debris flows are also a risk in prolonged rainfall. Road closures will be possible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.  You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County until 7 PM Tuesday, 6/13/17. Heavy rainfall is expected across the area which may lead to flash flooding.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for West central Athens County Until 11:15 PM.

At 8:09 PM, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing very heavy rain across the warned area, with little movement. These storms are expected to continue through 9 PM before diminishing. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Chauncey, Amesville and The Plains.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Western Athens County Until 715 PM, Friday 5/19/17.

HAZARD, 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE, Radar indicated.

IMPACT, Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

Wind Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for Athens County, which is in effect from 12PM until 6PM, Tuesday, May 2nd.

  • Winds – West 15 to 20 mph with gusts of 45 to 50 mph.
  • Timing – Noon today through 6 PM this evening.
  • Impacts – Trees may fall. Power outages may occur. High profile vehicles may have difficulty driving.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Flash Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County until 2 PM Saturday, April 29, 2017.

Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected through the morning. Some areas within the watch have already received around an inch of rainfall, with an additional 1 to 2 inches expected where repetitive storms occur.

In these localized areas, fast rises on creeks and streams and streams is expected to lead to potential flash flooding.
