Athens County elevated risk of wildfires this afternoon and early evening, Wednesday, 03/10/2021.

The combination of low relative humidity, above normal temperatures, and gusty winds will create an elevated risk for wildfires this afternoon and evening.

Open burning of any type is considered extremely dangerous at this time. Be careful of heat and sparks while operating any equipment and avoid smoking in wildland areas.

Ohio State Law prohibits burning in the spring from 6 AM to 6 PM March 1st through May 31st.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT: The wildfire danger is high today Monday, 3/8/201 for Southeast Ohio. Very dry conditions, along with occasional gusty winds are expected this afternoon.

Due to social distancing recommendations on preventing the spread of the COVID-19, Nelsonville City Council will be meeting in regular session Monday, March 8, 2021 at 7PM via a virtual meeting. The public may not attend the meeting in person. The meeting will be live streamed from the City of Nelsonville Facebook Page, (City of Nelsonville, Ohio, @nelsonvillecity). Citizens comments and business and organizational comments may be made online. The public is invited and encouraged to attend virtually online.

Athens Co and Nelsonville now using HYPER-REACH Emergency Notification System to mass notify residents in emergencies

Athens County and the City of Nelsonville are now using the HYPER-REACH- Emergency Notification System to notify Athens County residents in emergency situations where events have occurred and special instructions to residents in a specific neighborhood are needed.  Examples of those instructions include missing persons where their life may be endangered, emergency evacuation or shelter in place instructions, or other critical life safety information.

This system will allow you to receive notifications via landline, cellular phone or e-mail by simply following the registration steps.

If you have previously registered your phone(s)/email(s) with the past system, you can register them again if you need to update the name/address. If you are unsure as to if your phone is in the database, please register. Database administrators will remove duplicate entries.

Registering the additional information in the Community Alerts option will allow your unlisted phone, cellular phone, email, and/or TDD to be notified for local emergencies and community alerts as well.

Selecting the Weather Alerts option will enable weather notifications to any phone or email address. If you opt-out of Weather Alerts, you will not receive them, even on your landline (if you enter it below).
