The Nelsonville City Council will hold a special meeting on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 5:00 PM, at City Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the appointment of a full-time police officer to an open position. Additionally, the city council will interview a city manager candidate and discuss pending litigation. The interview and pending litigation discussion will be done in executive session, in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code, Rule 3358:17-1-04.2 | Executive sessions.

Athens Co Heat Advisory in effect Fri, 7/28/23, 11AM until 9PM, Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Athens County and surrounding areas in effect Friday, July 28, 2023, from 1:00 AM until 9:00 PM.

WHAT – Heat index values up to 105 expected.

WHERE – Portions of southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, and central, northern and southern West Virginia.

WHEN – From 11 AM to 9 PM Friday, July 28, 2023.

IMPACTS – Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.

The Ohio EPA has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the state of Ohio until midnight Mon, 7/17/23, unhealthy for sensitive groups

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the entire state of Ohio until midnight Monday, July 17, 2023.

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires continues to adversely impact air quality. The Agency expects the Air Quality Index to be in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Athens County until 9:00 PM, Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Remember, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for Severe Thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe Thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce Tornadoes.
