Flash Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County from 8PM, Thursday, 7/27/17 through 8PM, Friday, 7/28/17.

Rounds of showers and thunderstorms with very heavy rain are expected through Friday. This rainfall, coupled with rain that has already fallen, could produce flash flooding, especially along small streams, creeks, low spots and poor drainage areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

The following incident has been listed by Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous as August, 2017 Crimes of the Month.

The Athens Police Department is requesting your information pertaining to the location of Joseph E. Papineau.  

Mr. Papineau is being sought for his involvement in multiple criminal acts within the City and the County.  He currently has three separate warrants for his arrest from three different law enforcement agencies. The arrest warrants stem from charges involving receiving stolen property, possession of cocaine, and a traffic offense.

Athens County Crime Solvers Anonymous is offering a $2,000.00 cash reward for information on the above crimes if that information leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible. *Information on serious misdemeanors will be limited to a $1000.00 cash reward.  **Any information that leads to the arrest of an individual responsible for graffiti, the board can authorize up to a $500.00 cash reward. If you have information on these crimes, please call (740) 594 – 3331.

Northern Athens Co Severe Thunder Storm Warning until 5:15PM, Sat, 7/22, seek shelter if threatening weather approaches!

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northern Athens County until 5:15 PM.

At 424 PM, a severe thunderstorm was located over Shawnee, moving east at 35 mph.

  • HAZARD, 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.
  • SOURCE, Radar indicated.
  • IMPACT, Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include Nelsonville, Glouster, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Murray City, Trimble, Amesville and Burr Oak State Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

REMEMBER, A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.
