The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Athens County in effect until 7:00AM, Thursday, April 3, 2025.

Remember, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for Severe Thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe Thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce Tornadoes.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County in effect from 2:00AM, Thursday, April 3, 2025, until 8:00AM Sunday, April 6, 2025.

* WHAT…Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.

* WHERE…Portions of southeast Ohio, including the following counties, Athens, Gallia, Jackson OH, Lawrence OH, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington.

* WHEN…From 2:00AM, Thursday, April 3, 2025, until 8:00AM Sunday, April 6, 2025.

* IMPACTS…Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

NW Athens County Severe Thunderstorm WARNING in effect until Sun, 3/30/2025, at 11:45PM, seek shelter if threatened by severe weather!

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northwestern Athens County until 11:45PM Sunday, March 30, 2025.

At 10:52 PM, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Bremen to 10 miles southwest of Hocking Hills State Park, moving east at 45 mph.

HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts and penny size hail.

SOURCE…Radar indicated.

IMPACT…Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include… Chauncey, Nelsonville, Trimble, Glouster, Jacksonville, The Plains, Buchtel, and Burr Oak State Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…Remain alert for a possible tornado! Tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado, go at once into the basement or small central room in a sturdy structure. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

The City of Nelsonville Utilities Office will be closed to walk in traffic Friday, March 21, 2025, due to office carpet cleaning. The Utility Office will be open for telephone calls and payment processing through the payment drop box outside City Hall. Payments can also be made online at https://tinyurl.com/2stw3ure. The utilities office will reopen Monday, March 24, 2025, for normal business hours of 7:30AM to 4:00PM. The staff apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.
