The City of Nelsonville is experiencing a citywide electrical power outage, stay safe and conserve resources

The City of Nelsonville is experiencing a citywide electrical power outage. Wind gusts up to 60 mph and saturated ground have brought down numerous trees, poles and power lines across the state. Currently more than 125,000 AEP Ohio customers are without power. Restoration efforts have been hampered for much of the afternoon because of the severity of the winds which have prevented line workers from using buckets and other equipment that aid in speedier restoration.

Due to the extent of the storm damage, customers should prepare for a multi-day outage event. Estimated restoration times for all affected areas are expected to be available tomorrow early evening. Please know AEP Ohio crews will work through the night and for as long as it takes to restore all customers.

Remember, if you see a downed wire, stay away from it and anything it may be touching. Call 9-1-1 or AEP Ohio to report it.

POWER OUTAGE SAFETY CHECKLIST

  • Stay away from all downed lines or sparking equipment and keep children and pets away from fallen lines and anything the lines may touch.
  • Never remove debris within 10 feet of a power line.
  • Call emergency services only if you have an emergency. Do not call 9-1-1 or other emergency services to check on power restoration status.
  • Unplug major appliances to protect them when power comes back on.
  • Leave a light turned on so you know when power is restored.
  • Refuel heaters, lamps and generators outside, and stay away from any flames or sparks. Wipe up fuel spills immediately.
  • Let AEP Oho know if you’re using a generator – this protects you and our line workers as they work to restore power.
  • If you use a portable generator during power outages, make sure it is properly installed. It should be installed by a qualified electrician who will ensure that it meets national, state and local electrical codes.
  • Never operate lanterns, heaters or fuel-fired stoves without proper ventilation.
  • Never burn charcoal indoors — it releases poisonous carbon monoxide.
  • Conserve drinking water, water and wastewater treatment facilities are running on generator backup.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed.
