Flood Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Athens County in effect from 8:00PM, Saturday 9/8/18 until 8:00PM, Monday 9/10/18.

  • Rain, heavy at times, moving into the area tonight, and then persisting into Monday. Thunderstorms are also possible.
  • Runoff from the heavy rain is likely to flood urban and other poor drainage areas. Streams may come out of their banks, resulting in water over roads and into buildings. In time, there will also be rises on mainstem rivers.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

ATHENS CO FLASH FLOOD WATCH 12NOON, THU, 7/5/18 TO 1AM FRI, 7/6/18, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS!

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County from 12 Noon, Thursday, 7/5/18 until 1:00 AM, Friday, 7/6/18.

  • Slow moving thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall rates are likely, and may result in rapid rises of water.
  • Diurnal heating, orographic lift, and abundant moisture will combine to produce thunderstorms capable to produce rainfall rates of 1.5 to 2 inches per hour.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, which is in effect from 12 noon to 8:00 PM Wednesday, 7/4/2018.

  • HEAT INDEX VALUES, Up to 106 due to temperatures in the mid 80s, and dewpoints in the lower 70s.
  • TIMING, 12 Noon to 8 pm both days, highest values 2 to 7 pm.
  • IMPACTS, The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure. Limited visibilities will make travel very difficult.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS; Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.   Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9-1-1.

  • HEAT INDEX VALUES, Around 100 this afternoon due to temperatures in the mid 90s, and dewpoints around 70. Up to 105 due to temperatures in the mid 90s, and dewpoints in the lower 70s Wednesday afternoon.
  • TIMING, Noon to 8 pm both days, highest values 2 to 7 pm.
  • IMPACTS, The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure.

NW Athens Co Flash Flood Warning until 915PM, Mon, 7/2/18, go to high ground if threatened by rising water

Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Northwestern Athens County until 915 PM, Monday, 7/2/2018.

At 618 PM, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area.  Up to two inches of rain have already fallen. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Nelsonville, Glouster, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble, and Burr Oak State Park.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS;
Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Flood Warning for Small Streams in Western Athens Co until 745AM Fri, 6/22/18, seek shelter if threatened!

Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Small Streams in Western Athens County until 745 AM Friday, 6/22/18.

At 1040 PM, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain that fell earlier Thursday will cause flooding. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen, but up to two inches had fallen upstream. In addition, rainfall amounts over the past two days were as much as three inches.

The Sunday and Monday creeks, and other small streams in the area, were on the rise, and will exceed bankfull overnight in some locations. Several roads have already been impacted, and additional flooding is expected overnight.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Albany, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble, and The Plains.

Additional rainfall amounts of a quarter to a half inch are expected in the warned area overnight, mainly early on.

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Athens County from 1 PM, Thursday, 6/21/8 through 2 AM, Saturday, 6/23/18.

Multiple rounds of showers and storms are likely today through Friday. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected each day, with locally higher amounts.

Heavy amounts of rain in short periods of time may cause creeks and streams to rapidly rise out of their banks, along with the potential of flash flooding in urban areas.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning for NW Athens County until 4:30PM, please seek shelter if threatened by storm!

The National Weather Service in has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northwestern Athens County until 4:30PM.

At 3:55PM, a severe thunderstorm was located over Buchtel, or near Nelsonville, moving south at 10 mph.

  •  HAZARD, 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.
  • SOURCE, Radar indicated.
  • IMPACT, Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster, Chauncey, Buchtel, Jacksonville, Trimble and The Plains.
