Athens Co Heat Advisory in effect Fri, 7/28/23, 11AM until 9PM, Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Athens County and surrounding areas in effect Friday, July 28, 2023, from 1:00 AM until 9:00 PM.

WHAT – Heat index values up to 105 expected.

WHERE – Portions of southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, and central, northern and southern West Virginia.

WHEN – From 11 AM to 9 PM Friday, July 28, 2023.

IMPACTS – Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the entire state of Ohio until midnight Monday, July 17, 2023.

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires continues to adversely impact air quality. The Agency expects the Air Quality Index to be in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range.

Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe Thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce Tornadoes.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has issued an Air Quality Advisory for the entire state of Ohio until 1:00AM, Friday, June 9, 2023.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to adversely impact air quality. The Agency expects the Air Quality Index to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups` to `unhealthy` ranges.

When air quality is in this range, people who are in sensitive groups (due to medical conditions, exposure conditions, or innate susceptibility) may experience health effects during outdoor activities. To decrease the potential for health issues, sensitive groups of people (children, elderly, people with asthma or COPD) should limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity.

Athens Co Red Flag Warning in effect Thu, 4/20/23, 12PM until 8PM, enhanced risk of wildfire ignition and spread, no open burning!

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for low relative humidity, gusty winds, and dry fuels, in effect Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 12PM to 8 PM for Southeast Ohio including Athens County.

Timing… Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 12PM to 8 PM.

Winds…Southwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Relative Humidity…As low as 19 percent.

Temperatures…In the lower 80s.

Lightning…None.

Impacts…Enhanced risk of wildfire ignition and spread.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring now…. or will shortly. A combination of strong winds…low relative humidity…and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Increased fire danger threat Tuesday, April 18, 2023, for southeast Ohio including Athens County.

Very dry conditions are expected on Tuesday along with strong winds. Be very careful of heat and sparks while operating equipment, dispose of cigarettes properly, and follow local burn laws. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

High Fire Danger in Southeast Ohio Thu, 4/13/23 including Athens Co, Ohio state law prohibits burning from 6 AM to 6 PM

A fire danger statement has been issued in coordination with the Ohio Division of Forestry.

The wildfire danger is high today Thursday, April 13, 2023, for southeast Ohio including Athens County, with very dry conditions expected this afternoon.

Open burning of any type is considered extremely dangerous at this time. Be very careful of heat and sparks while operating any equipment or smoking in wildland areas.

Ohio state law prohibits burning during the months of March, April, May, October and November from 6 AM to 6 PM.
