The 2025 Ohio’s sales tax holiday runs from Friday, August 1st at 12:00 a.m. until Thursday, August 14th at 11:59 p.m.
What’s included
During this period, nearly all tangible personal property items that cost $500 or less per item will be exempt from state sales tax. This exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases.
Examples of items that are typically tax-exempt include:
- Electronics (e.g., computers, televisions)
- Clothing
- Books
- Home goods (e.g., furniture, kitchenware)
- Plants (both indoor and outdoor)
- Sporting goods
- Dine-in food and beverages (excluding alcoholic beverages)
- Dietary supplements
- School supplies
What’s not included
Several categories of items remain subject to sales tax during the holiday, regardless of price:
- Watercraft or outboard motors
- Motor vehicles
- Alcoholic beverages
- Tobacco products
- Vapor products
- Items containing marijuana
- Services (e.g., repairs or installations)
Important considerations
- The $500 limit applies per item, not to the entire purchase. So you can buy multiple eligible items, as long as each one is $500 or less, and they’ll all be tax-free.
- The sales tax holiday applies to items purchased online as well as in stores.
- Some retailers might have specific policies or rules regarding the sales tax holiday, so it’s always a good idea to check with individual stores before making your purchases.
