The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING for Athens County and surrounding areas from 7:00AM, Sunday, January 5, 2025, until 7:00PM, Monday, January 6, 2025.
WHAT – Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches and ice accumulations up to a quarter of an inch.
WHERE – Portions of northeast Kentucky and southeast Ohio including Athens County.
WHEN – From 7:00AM, Sunday, January 5, 2025, until 7:00PM, Monday, January 6, 2025.
IMPACTS – Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS – If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.
